Memorial Size Frequently Asked Questions
1How do I choose a size?
Size of your memorial will depend on:
1. The cemetery
2. The number of plots available
3. The number of names
4. Your preference
2How do I find out what size I can have?
Call the cemetery where the memorial will be placed. Cemeteries have restrictions about shape and size dependent on where the plots are located. Once you know their regulations you can choose a size that will best suit your needs.
3What if my memorial will go to a family cemetery?
When placing a memorial at a family cemetery there are no size restrictions.
4How do you measure a memorial?
A measurement should be taken from one side to the other. This will be the width of the stone and the first number indicated in any measurements. ie. 30" x 18" x 4" - 30 inches is the width.
The second measurement should be taken from the middle bottom edge to the tallest point. This will be the height of the stone and the second number indicated in any measurement. ie. 30" x 18" x 4" - 18 inches is the height.
The third measurement indicates how thick the memorial is. At Glacier Monuments, we only use memorial grade granite that won't crack. This is typically 4 inches or 6 inches. Counter top granite is typically 1"-1.5" thick and will crack as it sits in the ground and is subject to pressure.
5The memorial is for a baby or young child, what size should I use?
For infants that have passed, we have a 8" x 16" flat marker or a 20" x 12" slant. Of course, any size can be used for your little one if the cemetery allows. There are also programs available to assist with the purchase of an infant marker. Please talk to a store representative for more information.
6My spouse and I will both be on the memorial.
For two names we recommend a wider memorial. This will allow enough space for each person's information and keep the text large enough to read as you stand at the memorial. If cemetery regulations limit how wide you can go, you can choose a taller memorial and stack the names.
7I want a memorial that is taller than it is wide.
A memorial that is taller than it is wide is called a tablet. Tablet monuments are popular when there is not much room for extra width and height is not restricted.
